Beer: born: 6200 B.C.; occupation: intoxicant; interests: yeast, malt, hops, water, the salvation of all men's souls
the word booze: comes from the 14th century words "bouze", "bouse", and "bowse" which were derived from a Dutch word meaning "to guzzle liquor".
rule of thumb: Before thermometers, brewers would dip a thumb into the mix to find the right temperature for adding yeast. Too cold, and the yeast wouldn't grow. Too hot, and the yeast would die.
mind your P's and Q's: In old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down.
wet your whistle: Many years ago pub regulars had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic mugs. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service.
