Beers

jump down to:

Beer
born: 6200 B.C.
occupation: intoxicant
interests: yeast, malt, hops, water, the salvation of all men's souls
the word booze
comes from the 14th century words "bouze", "bouse", and "bowse" which were derived from a Dutch word meaning "to guzzle liquor".
rule of thumb
Before thermometers, brewers would dip a thumb into the mix to find the right temperature for adding yeast. Too cold, and the yeast wouldn't grow. Too hot, and the yeast would die.
mind your P's and Q's
In old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down.
wet your whistle
Many years ago pub regulars had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic mugs. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service.

You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer. - Frank Zappa

Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but it does not go nearly so well with pizza. - Dave Barry
